The film is based on The Horse and His Boy written by C. S. Lewis. The story centers on the Narnians on board of the ship bound for Narrowhaven, where Aslan has warned them of danger. The ship's crew are worried that the "beast folk" will bring bad luck upon them, so they set out on a journey to return their new passengers to their homeland. The horse, Bree, who spent his entire life in Calormen, where horses are seen as mere beasts of burden and have no rights, decides to run away from the ship in order to see a real Narnian city and learn about Aslan's creation from someone else than a mere horse. The Beast folk, however, capture him and tie him up with chains to prevent his escape. The ship's captain sends an extra crew member to keep the horse away from the Narnians. Bree does not want to leave his new friends, but after sleeping on it for a bit, he decides to return to the ship while at the same time trying secretly to free himself so he can visit Narnia with his new friends. On the journey back the ship meets up with two other ships also traveling on their way back home. Things get worse when one of them brings more angry beastmen onboard of its own, due to something that happened on their journey home. The Narnian ship gets caught in a storm and with it the ship's crew, Bree and his friends. Unable to be saved with a fast boat, the captain sends a rescue party on a longboat. Bree sees an image of a white horse coming after them, with a rider on his back. The storm gets worse and the lifeboat is destroyed by waves and finally all aboard are killed. Bree survives, but is walking in water while he sees images of land around him getting smaller until he finally falls unconscious. When he wakes up he finds himself alive on another island, while another man sleeps near him. The mysterious man wakes up while Bree starts explaining everything that happened to him after their ship sank. The man, wearing a strange armor and carrying a sword, is the only survivor from the ship that was destroyed by the Narnian vessel. Bree and the man decide to head for Narnia together and after days of traveling they finally arrive. After Bree and his friend arrive in Narnia they get separated and captured by Calormen soldiers. Bree meets Aravis Tarkaan, who he immediately recognizes from Aslan's country. She explains to him that her father is one of the local Kings, but she doesn't want to live in a world where animals are slaves or hunted for sport. She tells him her story about how she got to Calormen, while secretly planning an escape with her horse friend.
